$31,000 grant awarded to fund Digital Community Message Board

Project made possible thanks to Columbia Basin Trust, Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program.

Upon receiving the CBT CIP/AAP Grant, the Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce will now move forward with a project that will increase the publics awareness of local products, services and events, thereby amplifying local spending and event attendance.

According to the Columbia Basin Business Retention and Expansion Project report (2013), the tendency among local residents to purchase products outside of the community may be shrinking the local economy. This is evidenced by the fact that, only a third of respondents reported that they buy primarily from local suppliers. Money from local customers is therefore exiting the region.

As a potential action, improving local knowledge of the types of products and services that are available locally was recommended.

“We know that there is value in promoting local products and services in high-traffic areas. However, the value of a highly visible location rests largely on the ability of the sign to inform passers-by. The drawback of a static sign is that people quit looking at it. They continue to look at digital message boards because they are always changing.” - Shelly Wadden, Executive Director

Digital message boards have proven to be highly effective in increasing consumer awareness and directly motivating new and returning prospects to buy from a business or attend an event. Both businesses and the general public will benefit from an increased awareness of local products and services.

Revenues generated from the community message board will be reinvested back into the business community in the form of targeted workforce development training and recruitment and retention initiatives. “This is an exciting opportunity that will enable our organization to further support, grow and promote the local business community.” - Terry Hickey, President
