Spotlight on the Golden Foodbank

Spotlight on the Golden Foodbank
Posted on 04/22/2021
Since it's national volunteer week we wanted to spotlight one of our amazing Non-Profit Members.

The Golden Food Bank Society provides an essential service to our community as an emergency food source. But, it’s so much more than that. The Golden Food Bank is a community of passionate people trying to find holistic solutions to food security.

I caught up with Rachel Gamble and we discussed some common misconceptions of the Food Bank, their plans for the new location and their new drive for monthly benefactors.

What are your plans for the new location?
Well, we’re really excited to have the new space. It will allow us to be more accessible so all our clients and volunteers can come into the space. We will also have more community space to host open houses and the like once we’re allowed to gather again.
The new space will give us a chance to expand our garden beds, opening lots of possibilities to teach gardening skills, collaborate with other local groups and achieve food security for our whole community.

PS - we are in need of assistance moving the Third Week of June, if you have a van or some time to donate let Rachel know at [email protected].

What projects are you working on at the moment?
Since January, the Food Bank has been working with Loop Resource, a food recovery program focused on diverting food waste. This connects us directly with local grocery stores to give us the food that may have some minor defect or packaging issue. We’ve always had a relationship with the grocery stores but now we get upwards of 300kg/day from local establishments.

The best part of Loop Resource is it also connects food sellers to farmers who can use the expired products to feed their animals.

How is the Food Bank coping with the ongoing pandemic?
The community has been outstanding in their support for the Food Bank and have continued to give throughout the pandemic. It’s heartwarming to see the number of people who have stepped up to donate during this time.

How can you get more involved with the Food Bank?
Sign up for our Newsletter where we share opportunities and projects we are working on.
Consider becoming a monthly donor, for $25/month the Food Bank gets consistency and reassurance to keep running their great programs and you get a funky badge.
We are always looking for in-kind donations as well. The Food Bank can make use of just about any skill set - Right now we are searching for some talented photographers to help document the move.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Be curious about your Food Bank, we have lots of great programs and events for the whole community. We also love to answer your questions.
